Sigma Engineers Ltd Inc. has rejected claims that it received a government contract just five days after being registered in Guyana, clarifying that the contracts being referenced were instead awarded to a company in Bangladesh.
In a statement responding to allegations made by Leader of the Opposition Azruddin Mohamed, Sigma Engineers Ltd Inc. said there has been a misrepresentation of the company’s history and operations in Guyana.
The company explained that Sigma Engineers Ltd Inc. was registered in Guyana on October 6, 2022, but did not receive its first contract in the country until 2026. According to Sigma Engineers, that contract was awarded following a national competitive bidding process conducted through the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB).
The company said the contracts being referenced as having been awarded shortly after registration were not awarded to Sigma Engineers Ltd Inc. in Guyana, but to Sigma Engineers Ltd in Bangladesh, a company incorporated there since 2003.
The company also sought to clarify the role of Mohamed Aqtar Ali, stating that he has been engaged by Sigma Engineers Ltd Inc. in Guyana in a senior technical consultant capacity but has no affiliation with the company in Bangladesh.
Sigma Engineers described the allegations made against it as serious misrepresentations of the facts and said it has already engaged legal counsel.
“The company categorically rejects the allegations and what it considers to be serious misrepresentations of the facts,” the statement noted.
It added that, given the nature of the statements made, the company intends to pursue appropriate legal action. Sigma Engineers Ltd Inc. maintained that it has operated in accordance with Guyana’s laws and regulations and remains committed to maintaining high standards of professionalism, accountability and integrity.
The company also said public discussions about businesses operating in Guyana should be based on accurate and verifiable information.
