The PPP/C government has budgeted $183.6 billion in 2026 to advance Guyana’s education sector, according to Minister of Finance, Dr Ashni Singh, who presented the 2026 National Budget to the National Assembly on Monday.
Dr Singh emphasised that modernising the education system is essential to prepare a skilled workforce and empower all Guyanese to access educational opportunities. Investments are focused on expanding access, improving quality, and leveraging technology to deliver world-class education across all levels.
In 2026, $24.3 billion is earmarked for the completion of over 40 schools, including Falls Top and Kanapang nursery schools; Cracrana and Diamond No. 2 primary schools, as well as Karaudarnau and Kwebanna secondary schools, alongside the continuous rehabilitation and maintenance of existing schools. Works will also advance on student dormitories at Jawalla, North West, Port Kaituma, Santa Rosa and Waramadong.
Textbooks, workbooks, and reading materials will receive $2.3 billion, while school grants are allocated $3.1 billion to support classroom resources.
The Guyana Digital School will continue operations with $176.1 million, following its 2025 launch, which provided free supplemental curriculum content to over 22,000 students. The National School Feeding Programme will receive $7 billion, and cash grants and uniform support will continue to benefit all public and private school children. Scholarships through the Guyana Online Academy of Learning (GOAL) are budgeted $5.8 billion, ensuring broader access to tertiary education.
Technical and vocational training remains a priority, with $2.5 billion allocated to expand TVET programs and $723.1 million dedicated to training over 2,000 persons in trades such as welding, plumbing, and electrical installation.
Dr Singh noted that in 2025, $183.5 billion was spent to support these interventions, reflecting the government’s ongoing commitment to education at all levels.
