The PPP/C government has allocated $159.1 billion in 2026 to advance housing development across Guyana, according to Minister of Finance, Dr Ashni Singh.
During his budget presentation on Monday, Dr Singh highlighted that over the past five years, the government developed over 100 housing areas, allocated more than 53,000 house lots, and constructed over 2,600 homes across all income categories.
Housing assistance measures such as the removal of VAT on locally produced building materials, mortgage relief programmes and direct subsidy initiatives have made homeownership more accessible, the finance minister said.
In 2026, the ministry plans to allocate 15,000 house lots, facilitate the construction of 8,000 new homes, and issue over 7,000 titles and transports. Development will continue in key areas, including Moleson Creek, Providence, Overwinning, Leonora, and Charity, alongside upgrades to recreational facilities, street lighting, and drainage systems in existing communities.
The Silica City project will also advance, with works continuing on residential units and supporting infrastructure, reflecting the government’s commitment to sustainable and modern housing solutions for all Guyanese.
According to Dr Singh, the vision for the next five years includes a “heavy focus” on eliminating the current backlog of housing applications for all regions except for Region 4, where the demand is much higher than in other regions.
“We will continue our aggressive agenda to create new housing stock by constructing new housing areas and upgrading existing ones. In pursuit of this goal, the government plans to build 40,000 new homes, moving away from house lot allocation to turnkey homes in keeping with public demand,” Dr Singh said.
