UG gets $14.5 billion; loans written off for over 4,000 students

The University of Guyana (UG) has been allocated $14.5 billion in the 2026 budget to support its ongoing operations and expanded programmes.

Finance Minister, Dr Ashni Singh, in his budget presentation on Monday, highlighted that in response to high demand for programmes in engineering and medical sciences, the PPP/C government will expand access to these courses in Regions 2, 3, and 6 at a cost of $1 billion in 2026, with 130 students already registered in the engineering programmes.

In addition, to ease the financial burden on students, the government has written off over $3 billion in loans for more than 4,000 UG graduates and will continue this programme in 2026.

According to Dr Singh, since the PPP/C government abolished tuition fees, applications for higher education at UG rose sharply to over 26,000 for the 2025/2026 academic year, up from 17,800 in 2024/2025, reflecting the increased demand for quality tertiary education.
