The Ministry of Home Affairs has set new limits on vehicle window tinting, allowing tint levels ranging from 20% to 25% visible light transmission and introducing a fine of $30,000 for non-compliance, Minister Oneidge Walrond said on Monday.
Under the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic (Tint) Regulations 2025, which take effect on Jan. 1, 2026, front side windows must allow at least 25% visible light transmission, while rear side windows and the rear windscreen must allow at least 20%.
No tint will be permitted on the front windscreen, except for a visor not exceeding six inches from the top of the glass. Mirrored or reflective tint will be banned, the Minister said.
Walrond said the new framework replaces what had been a longstanding ban on tint, noting that more than 70% of vehicles were operating outside the previous legal limit, which required a minimum of 65% visible light transmission even for exempted vehicles
The updated rules allow all vehicles to carry some level of tint without seeking an exemption and introduce the use of approved tint meters to support consistent enforcement nationwide, the statement said
The regulations also set a penalty of $30,000 for offences related to the installation or use of non-compliant tint. The fines will apply both to vehicle operators and to businesses that apply tint in violation of the law.
Certain vehicles and users will continue to qualify for exemptions, including those used by the president and prime minister, designated government officials, the disciplined focus, emergency services, diplomatic missions, licensed private security firms, and individuals with certified medical conditions requiring reduced light exposure, the statement said. Approved exemptions will be recorded in a national digital tint registry
To ease the transition, authorities will implement a three-month amnesty period starting in January, during which motorists can test and adjust their tint at designated sites without penalty. Full enforcement will begin after the amnesty ends.
The statement updates a previous announcement in which the government had set the tint at 35% on side windows and 70% on front windscreens. Minister Walrond said the new conditions are in-keeping with “the hallmark approach of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic administration” to listen carefully and respond to feedback.
