Revival of Georgetown badly needed, but citizens must also do their part– Min. Benn

Minister within the Ministry of Housing, Vanessa Benn, has commended the initiative recently announced by President Dr Irfaan Ali to revive and beautify Georgetown, labelling it as a project that is “badly needed.” She made those comments during an interview on the Starting Point podcast.

Minister Benn underscored that the state of the capital city reflects on all Guyanese. “The fact that you have drains that are clogged, you have garbage that is all over the place, is a reflection on all of us as Guyanese citizens,” the minister noted.

President Ali’s revival plan includes projects such as the development of recreational spaces, the enhancement of architectural heritage sites, and the inclusion and celebration of biodiversity in the city. The Urban Framework Plan identifies five essential qualities that define the city’s identity, including the Garden City, landscape, and biodiversity.

Minister Benn was keen to note that citizens also need to play their part if the city is to reflect the path the country is on. “There is so much historical richness in our capital city that needs to be protected, that needs to be archived, that needs to be showcased,” she said.

President Ali unveiled the city’s revival plan at a press conference, noting that it is being executed with the support of the Kings Foundation. He recalled that billions of dollars were spent during his first term on infrastructure works in the city, such as drainage, roads, carpets, and cleaning. However, he acknowledged that much more remains to be done.

The president stated that his administration will ensure the capital city projects an image of sustainability, showcasing inclusion, economic transformation, and Guyana’s cultural heritage. He said there will also be a series of educational programmes aimed at behavioural change and public awareness about how the city is treated and impacted by individual actions. Among the initiatives planned are the creation of a walking trail around the city, rehabilitation of the old transport and rehabilitating the train station area into a museum. There are also plans for Stabroek waterfront development, improvement of the markets and the upgrading of shopping and other public areas.
