Region Seven has entered a new phase of development, as $5.6 billion will be expended this year to strengthen key sectors and improve services for residents. According to the recently appointed Regional Executive Officer (REO), Dr Josh Kanhai, this year’s allocation will help improve healthcare, strengthen access to education and revitalise the region’s tourism potential.
Speaking on the June 21 episode of the Starting Point Podcast, Dr Kanhai said improvement works are being done at the Bartica Hospital as plans move ahead for the construction of a new facility.
“The Bartica Hospital, as you know, that building is almost 100 years old and we’ve been working with it. I must say, I’m thankful for what the staff have been doing there with that building. And we are repairing it,” the REO said.
As for the new hospital, Dr Kanhai said works are being closely monitored, noting that the contractor has already started the process of driving piles.
On the education front, the official said major investments have been made to improve access, particularly in remote communities.
“From 2020 to now, we’ve established schools in some of the most remote districts. Philippi, being so remote, now has a brand-new nursery school,” said the REO.
He added that these investments complement efforts to expand living quarters for teachers and new dormitories for students across the region.
Tourism is also being targeted as a key area for growth. Dr Kanhai said he wants to revitalise Bartica Town Week, bringing together families while attracting visitors from the coastland to enjoy water sports and other activities.
“One of the things we want to do is have Motocross. I met with the committee recently and we intend to revitalise it,” Dr Kanhai said.
Motocross is an off-road motorcycle racing sport that is popular across Guyana and often attracts large crowds. Events typically feature riders competing on dirt tracks with jumps, turns and other obstacles, making it a major draw for both competitors and spectators.
The REO said these initiatives form part of a broader effort to diversify the region’s economy and create new opportunities for residents. Through continued investments in healthcare, education and tourism, Dr. Kanhai said Region Seven is being positioned to build on its traditional strengths while supporting sustainable growth and development.
